Occasional Tourettes

To the city centre to visit the local Radio Station for the Asian community.

At moments like this I often seem to develop instant Tourette's. I don't know the radio station so I'm on my best behavior.

I walk down the street saying to myself "I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist."

Past the shops. Down the road. I see the building in the distance.

"I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist."

I stop outside the door. It seems to be locked so I press the buzzer.

"I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist. I must not say anything racist."

I wait. The cheery man opens the door.

"Ah, welcome" he says "what faith community do you come from?"
"Well I'm more or less Church of England."
"More or less?"
"Well yeah you don't have to actually believe anything to be Church of England. You just have to be English."

OH BOLLOCKS!!!!!!!!

Angry

Few things get me really angry, but today I found out about 'trusted computing'.

Trusted computing it turns out is a way of having cryptography built into a chip in your computer that is backed up with something called 'non-volatile memory'. It is being developed by a number of different companies including...wait for it...Microsoft.

It is supposed to offer fast and effective computing. The problem is this: It doesn't protect against spyware, viruses, trojans or indeed any particular security threat. One thing is does do very effectively though is to ensure the security of the system against the operator. In fact it is possible to use this technology to enable your computer to refuse to run an unauthorised operating system which bearing in mind that this is being developed by (among others) Microsoft makes me angry.

why because we are talking about a company that already has 90% market share, more than 99% if you take away the specialist hardware from Apple. Why would a company that secure want to restrict its competition.

At the moment if you want to buy a computer that runs Microsoft software you have only to follow the following steps:

1) Go to a computer shop...if you don't know where one is, drive to a place that clearly has more than one shop and ask directions.

2) Go to the centre of this computer shop.

3) Close your eyes.

4) Spin round at least 50 times, fairly quickly.

5) With your eyes still closed, attempt to walk in a straight line.

6) Buy the first computer your forehead touches.

Whereas if you wish to own a computer that does not run Microsoft's products you must

A) Buy a a computer with specialised hardware which runs a different OS

B) Install an OS (not exactly easy...though I have done it several times)

C) Buy a computer from Dell

Why would they need to replace B with "Build your own computer". OK that only needs a bit of soldering a small amount of screwing (whereas running Vista seems to involve an awful lot of screwing mostly by Microsoft).

It is hard not to get angry about this...I feel like I have to do something... but what???

For the sake of completeness

Well here is my final video, covering the elections. In it we meet up with some familiar cynics, and we find out that even when SUSU ask the Anglican Chaplain to drum up some votes using a video camera it doesn't always work!
